Good question, but there are several reasons. For one thing, mission trips are part of the Delta culture. High school and college students have been going to different cities around the country for years, serving alongside local ministries in reaching communities for Christ. A mission trip is the opportunity for students to get out of their routine and to be exposed to new places and cultures, to ways of life that are different from here in Rockford, and to serve others with no strings attached.
To be sure, mission trips accomplish a lot for others.
On this summer’s trip, students worked with a bi-lingual Hispanic church plant in Denver that serves three generations of believers and seekers. Students distributed flyers in the neighborhood inviting kids to a sports camp. Would anyone come?
